How Can I Help?

With the 2017 *MDRT Annual Meeting just 5 weeks away, volunteers in the **PGA Leadership Committee are ready with polished blueprints for execution at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. My service this year as a PGA Task Force Director brought back memories of the first time I served in the same role.

It is practiced within the PGA Committee that private evaluation meetings are held for constructive comments on how to improve one’s performance in the given role and provide a better assessment of who may be recommended to move up the ladder of leadership. In 2016 when the Annual Meeting was in Vancouver, I had the privilege to sit through mine with my Chair ***Tony Engrassia. Being my direct superior, I was expecting a list of self-improvement advice from him. But his first question not only surprised me, it left me dumfounded. “Janet,” he said, “what do you think I could have done better to help make your job easier for you?” That one experience in my close to 8 months of working with Tony made me realize one very important element in my relationship with others; IT’S NEVER ABOUT ME, IT IS ALWAYS ABOUT THE PEOPLE I WORK WITH.

I brought home this valuable take-away and applied it in my business; not only in my relationship with my clients but, most importantly, with my staff. I witnessed a change in the office atmosphere as they gained confidence in delivering their responsibilities and a willingness to learn and improve on their performance. An openness was created in place of the one-way communication that was present before.

** Volunteering to serve on a committee is not for everyone. Members devote their time and expertise without pay. The volunteer experience begins for most members either through the Membership Communications Committee (MCC) or at the MDRT Annual Meeting as a member of one of the 10 task forces that make up the Annual Meeting Program General Arrangements Committee.

The army of PGA volunteers, which numbers around 700, assists with the MDRT Annual Meetings logistics. Their responsibilities include directing foot traffic, serving as speaker liaisons, selling products in the MDRT Store and greeting first-time attendees. In short, without these volunteers, the MDRT Annual Meeting simply could not happen.
